Lake Nakuru National Park

A fenced Rift Valley sanctuary protecting black and white rhino, built around a soda lake known for seasonal flamingo gatherings.

Lake Nakuru National Park sits fully enclosed by a ring of acacia woodland and rocky escarpment on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, its centrepiece a shallow, alkaline lake whose chemistry shifts with the rains and, with it, the numbers of flamingos gathered along its shoreline. In good years the pink haze along the water is one of the more striking sights in East African birding, though the flamingo population moves between several Rift Valley lakes depending on algae levels, so sightings vary season to season.

What doesn’t vary is the park’s role as a rhino sanctuary. Nakuru was fenced early on specifically to protect black and white rhino from poaching, and the strategy worked — it’s now one of the more dependable places on a Kenyan itinerary to see both species at reasonably close range, often from the wooded viewpoints above Baboon Cliff or along the lakeshore tracks.

Because the park is small enough to explore thoroughly in a single day, and sits only a few hours from Nairobi via Naivasha, it works well as an early stop on a longer circuit or as a standalone add-on for travellers with limited time — a concentrated dose of Rift Valley scenery, rhino tracking and lake birdlife without a long transfer.

By Road

Roughly 2.5-3 hours from Nairobi via Naivasha on tarmac roads, making it one of the more accessible parks for a short circuit.

By Air

Charter flights are available to a private airstrip near the park for travellers combining Nakuru with a fly-in itinerary.
