The trip, in short
An 8-day family safari from Nairobi's animal orphanages through Samburu and Lake Nakuru to three unhurried days in the Masai Mara.
Family safaris live or die on the small moments, and this eight-day itinerary is built around them. It opens gently in Nairobi, with a morning at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust watching orphaned elephant calves take their midday mud bath, followed by an afternoon at the Giraffe Centre feeding Rothschild’s giraffes at eye level — the kind of hands-on wildlife encounter that tends to stick with kids long after the trip ends. From there the safari heads north to Samburu, where game drives along the Ewaso Ng’iro River turn up elephant families, leopard, and the region’s unusual “special five” species.
The second half of the trip runs south through Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its flamingo-lined shores and healthy rhino population, before ending with three unhurried days in the Masai Mara. Lodges throughout are chosen for family comfort — interconnecting rooms, shallow pools, kid-friendly menus — and vehicles are private, so nap schedules and bathroom breaks never have to compete with anyone else’s itinerary. It is a proper introduction to East Africa for younger travelers, paced to hold their attention without wearing them out.
