Diani Beach

A reef-protected stretch of Kenya's south coast with calm turquoise water, powder-white sand and strong watersports on offer.

South of Mombasa, the Kenyan coastline settles into a long, gently curving stretch of white coral sand backed by coconut palms — Diani Beach, one of the country’s most established beach destinations and a natural complement to an inland safari. An offshore reef runs almost the full length of the beach, breaking the swell and keeping the water inside it calm, shallow and startlingly turquoise for most of the year.

The reef also does double duty as a snorkelling and diving destination, with coral gardens close enough to shore for a short boat ride out, and the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park further south adding dolphin encounters to the list. For a livelier pace, kitesurfing has become a genuine draw here, with steady trade winds and warm water making Diani one of East Africa’s better-known kite spots; deep-sea fishing charters and dhow sunset cruises round out the options for travellers who want more than a lounge chair.

Diani sits close enough to the Shimba Hills and the Colobus Conservation trust to add a short wildlife excursion into an otherwise beach-focused stay, and its short flight connection to Nairobi and Mombasa makes it a straightforward add-on at either end of a Kenya safari itinerary.

Domestic flights connect Nairobi and Ukunda (Diani’s local airstrip) in around 1 hour.

By Road

Roughly 5-6 hours from Nairobi via Mombasa, or a short 45-minute transfer from Mombasa itself.
