Overview

The trip, in short

A full Mt Kenya traverse, ascending the drier Sirimon route and descending through the scenic Chogoria side.

This route flips the more common Chogoria-Sirimon pairing, climbing up the drier, more open Sirimon side of the mountain first — a steady path through moorland with clear views of the peak for most of the ascent, camping at Old Moses and Shipton’s Camp with a night built in for acclimatization before the summit attempt.

The reward for tackling it this direction is the descent: after summiting Point Lenana before sunrise, the trek drops down through Chogoria, widely considered the mountain’s most scenic side, past Lake Ellis and through the dramatic Gorges Valley before reaching the forest line. Trekking the full traverse rather than an out-and-back route means four days of genuinely different scenery, east side and west, moorland and rainforest, without retracing a single step.
