The trip, in short
Three days of game drives through Samburu's dry-country scenery, tracking the region's signature species along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Samburu doesn’t get the crowds of the Mara, and that’s exactly its appeal. The scenery is different too — red earth, doum palms and acacia scrub instead of open grassland — and it’s home to species you won’t find further south: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and the beisa oryx, known locally as the Samburu Special Five. The Ewaso Nyiro River running through the reserve keeps wildlife concentrated along its banks, which makes for consistently good game viewing over a short stay.
Three days is enough to properly settle into the rhythm of the reserve — early game drives while it’s cool, a rest through the heat of the day, and a second drive as the light softens toward evening. Camps here tend to be smaller and more intimate than in the busier southern parks, and local Samburu guides bring a level of cultural context to the drives that adds another layer to the wildlife.
