The trip, in short
A four-day Mt Kenya climb ascending the scenic Chogoria route and descending via Sirimon, summiting Point Lenana at 4,985m.
Chogoria is widely regarded as the most beautiful of Mt Kenya’s approach routes, and this four-day climb uses it for the ascent — a gradual path through dense rainforest and open moorland, past the still waters of Lake Ellis and the dramatic Gorges Valley, with the Giant’s Billiards Table rock formation marking the final approach to high camp. The gradient is kinder than the mountain’s other routes, which helps with acclimatization even on a compressed schedule.
Summit morning starts hours before dawn, a headlamp climb to Point Lenana (4,985m) timed to catch sunrise breaking over the Eastern Glaciers — Mt Kenya’s trekking summit and the highest point most climbers reach, the true peaks of Batian and Nelion being technical rock climbs. Descent follows the Sirimon route on the mountain’s drier northwestern flank, a faster, more direct path down through open moorland back to the trailhead, where transport is waiting for the return to Nairobi.
