The property
Set among doum palms on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, Samburu Sopa Lodge looks out over a landscape unlike anywhere else in Kenya's safari circuit — dry, russet-toned country that's home to species found almost nowhere south of here: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and the Somali ostrich. The lodge's domed cottages, in Sopa's familiar thatch-and-stone style, are arranged to catch the river breeze through the heat of the day.
A large pool sits above the riverbank, shaded by palms, and the open-sided dining and lounge areas make the most of the cooler evening air once the sun drops behind the hills. Local Samburu guides lead game drives along the river and into the surrounding scrub, and the lodge can arrange visits to a nearby Samburu village for those interested in the culture behind the landscape.
