Ashnil Mara Camp holds one of the best-positioned addresses in the reserve, set above a stretch of the Mara River famous for its wildebeest crossings during migration season. Even outside migration months, the wooden decks that front each tent look straight out over the plains, close enough to the water that a hippo pod’s grunting is standard evening background noise.

The camp’s restaurant covers unusually broad ground for a Mara property — international, oriental and traditional African dishes rotate through the menu, a small but appreciated point of difference. Days here can run as active or as relaxed as guests like, from a dawn balloon safari drifting over the plains to a slow picnic lunch arranged well away from camp, with the pool and open-air bar there for whichever pace wins out.
